Computer storage, or computer memory, refers to the computer components, devices and recording media that retain binary information for some interval of time. In casual language, memory, or active memory usually refers to random-access memory (RAM), or other forms of fast but temporary (non-persistent) storage, while storage or long-term memory typically refers to hard disks (HD) and other forms of storage which are slower to access but persistent when power is switched off.

The Zip drive is a medium-capacity removable disk storage system, introduced by Iomega in late 1994. Originally, Zip disks had a capacity of 100 MB, but later versions increased this to first 250 MB and then 750 MB. The format became the most popular of the super-floppy type products but never reached the status of a quasi-standard to replace the 3.5-inch floppy disk. Later, rewritable CDs and rewritable DVDs largely replaced Zip drives, and the internal and external CD writers known as Zip-650 or Zip-CD were sold under the Zip brand.

A bit is a binary digit, taking a value of either 0 or 1. Binary digits are a basic unit of information storage and communication in digital computing and digital information theory. Information theory also often uses the natural digit, called either a nit or a nat. Quantum computing also uses qubits, a single piece of information with a probability of being true. The bit is also a unit of measurement, the information capacity of one binary digit. It has the symbol bit, or b.
